Pointing out that the length of this railway is 208 km, Nariman the managing director and CEO of AFZ org. said that according to the memorandum concluded between the Aras and Maku Free Zone Organizations, the Railway Company and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development regarding the construction of Jolfa- Cheshmeh Soraya railway, all design operations , route studies, plans and ancillary facilities, construction of stations, sub-lines and institutional stations required up to the first stage (phase one) in Aras and Maku free zones, signs and communications and economic studies and proposing a partnership and investment model with BOT priority will fall upon the Maku Free Zone Organization. The MOU content will be reviewed and approved by the Railway Company of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Aras Free Zone, with an area of over 50,000 hectares along the Aras Border River, 130 km northwest of Tabriz, sharing border with the Republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Construction of railway from the Aras Free Zone into the Turkish soil could transform the northwest region into the main transit route for European rail transit and the Caucasus region. Jolfa-Tabriz railway with 102 years is the oldest railway in Iran, which is electric and is currently in operation.
